Nikon's D7200 is a versatile DX-format DSLR that caters to both still photography and video users. Featuring a 24.2MP CMOS sensor which lacks an optical low-pass filter, and an EXPEED 4 image processor, the D7200 is able to record up to 6 fps at full-resolution, or 7 fps at a 1.3x crop, with a 100-frame buffer for extended high-speed shooting. This sensor and processor combination also avails a top native sensitivity of ISO 25600, which can further be expanded to black & white-dedicated ISO 51200 and ISO 102400 sensitivities. Full HD 1080p video recording is supported up to 60 fps, and in-camera time lapse shooting with automatic exposure smoothing is possible for up to 9,999 consecutive frames.
A range of features harness the power of the D7200’s core technology, ensuring you’re free to experiment and get as creative as you please. When shooting, the large 8 cm (3.2 inch) 1229k-dot colour-tune LCD monitor lets you adjust the colour balance and brightness to suit your personal preference, while the anti-reflective coating enables easy operation in any conditions. For flexible composition offering 100 per cent frame coverage, the viewfinder also boasts an organic EL display element for a bright, high-contrast information display with low power consumption. Ergonomically designed to ensure a stable hold in a compact shape, usability functions are within easy reach for viewfinder, live view and playback. The improved ‘i’ button gives you direct access to frequently used functions, while the spot white balance can be set quickly when shooting in live view.
Taking full advantage of the auto-mode functions available and working to ensure you capture images with the finest possible results, the D7200 has an array of shooting features. Using the time-lapse photography mode, save images as movie files and view slow action in fast playback or shoot in continuous release mode with a shutter speed of 4 seconds or slower and you can produce spectacular light-trail photography
Raising the bar yet again the D7200 offers sharp photos and full HD video. With a large 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and Expeed 4 image processing maintaining higher quality all the way up to ISO 25600, images boast very wide dynamic range, low noise and rich colour gradation. By not employing an optical low-pass filter (OLPF) Nikon have ensured even the finest of textures like hair and feathers are captured in ultra-high definition. To gain extra reach, speed and wider AF coverage, Crop mode extends the reach of DX lenses by 1.3x and lets you shoot at up to 7 fps.
The incredible flexibility this camera offers is further assured by the pro-grade AF system that radically boosts the speed available to capture those decisive moments. Sensitive down to -3 EV, a total of 51 focus points with 15 cross-type sensors are utilised covering a wide area with high density. And thanks to the compatibility of the centre focus point with maximum lens apertures as small as f8, AF can be used with many lens/teleconverter combinations. This stress-free, precise focusing system is good for shooting at sports events or capturing the better wildlife shot and regardless of your photographic passion the D7200 has AF-area modes optimised to suit every subject matter.
With video features inherited from Nikon’s professional cameras, the D7200 is a highly capable moviemaking tool, with the Multi-area D-Movie function offering all the flexibility required for photographers who want to shoot better video. Recording Full HD movies at up to 25p/30p, there is also the option to switch to 1.3x crop mode and record at up to 1080/50p/60p. Taking full control you have the ability to create the movies you intended with an array of intuitive settings. Shoot with auto ISO control in M mode in order to make smooth transitions between dark and bright areas, use Zebra mode to see exactly where highlights are blown and apply the flat picture control setting for easier colour grading in post-production.
Recognising the importance of sound quality, this camera boasts enhanced audio controls that let you select the sound range (wide/voice) and reduce wind noise when recording with the built-in stereo microphone. Ensuring your shoot runs smoothly, a dedicated movie menu lets you store all movie settings in one place, while simultaneous capture of your footage can be recorded to the dual SD memory card slots and to an external recorder via the HDMI connector.
